Nick was sentenced to death at the age of twenty-one for alleged kidnapping, rape and murder. He spent twenty-three years innocent on death row in Pennsylvania – one of the USA’s toughest prisons known for torturing prisoners. For half his life, he was perceived as a monster.
“What happened in prison was inhumane. I was threatened, mistreated and almost beaten to death by the guards. People ask me why I am not filled with bitterness and the answer to everything is love, especially the love towards myself. Even though others treated me as a monster, I know that I am good the way I am and I tell myself this every day.”
The whole story and about 80 other portraits will appear in the book “People Like Us“.
