Nicole weighed a mere 36.4 kilograms, and her body temperature had sunk to 35 degrees celsius. She was cold and shaking. Her heart rate was at 22 beats per minute on the day her parents brought Nicole to the hospital – that’s the heart rate people have right before they die.
“My health deteriorated with each passing day as my bones poked out of my body more and more. I still didn’t feel like I was sick; on the contrary, I felt proud as I had read that many anorexic people didn’t manage to get their weight down to 36 kilograms. Perhaps I would have had one or two more days before my heart would have stopped beating. I was only able to admit to myself right before the end that I needed help but I was afraid of being fattened up.”
The whole story and about 80 other portraits will appear in the book “People Like Us“.
